Current Research Project: Simulation of Boundary Layer Transition Using Plasma Actuators
We won a three-year 150-million-won grant from the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do computational studies using CFDWARP of the interaction between a supersonic boundary layer and nanosecond pulse plasma actuators. Such will be the first Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of the Navier-Stokes equations fully coupled with a plasma model. Here are some preliminary results obtained using the CFDWARP code using the Linux cluster in the Computational Plasma and Reactive Flow Laboratory:
The plasma actuator creates within a few nanoseconds a plasma located deep beyond the boundary layer edge.
Current flows through the plasma and heats the air flow, creating zones of high temperature and low density on the edge of the boundary layer. Such are disturbed downstream by the shockwaves created by subsequent discharges, degenerating into turbulence.
Here we see the transition of the laminar boundary layer into a turbulent boundary layer through temperature contours at various crossstream planes.
